Chelsea Champions – Tottenham Unlucky Again…..??!!

So, the final day of the Premiership season has brought the last Champions League place up for grabs…and Liverpool have secured it.
This ends Arsenal’s brilliant run of qualifying – but will it spell the end for Wenger…?

Time will tell…..

For now, lets concentrate on the League title, which Chelsea secured a week or so ago.
So CONGRATULATIONS!! to the blues!!

BUT – did the best team win the Premiership…?
Lets take a look…..

Is it based on fitness, tactics, shooting boots, or just good and bad luck..?

When you look at the statistics of the whole season home and away, it was the away form that won the title for Chelsea.
Lets have a look at the breakdown of the top 6:

Away table

GP W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Chelsea 19 13 3 3 30 16 +14 42
2 Manchester City 19 12 2 5 43 22 +21 38
3 Manchester Utd 19 10 5 4 28 17 +11 35
4 Liverpool 19 10 5 4 33 24 +9 35
5 Tottenham 19 9 6 4 39 17 +22 33
6 Arsenal 19 9 3 7 38 28 +10 30

With Chelsea winning 13 games to Tottenham’s 9 wins, this was key.
As was Tottenham’s 6 draws to Chelsea’s 3 draws.

The goals make interesting reading too, with Tottenham scoring 9 more than Chelsea, and only conceding 1 more than Chelsea.
In theory, Tottenham should have won this away league with a goal difference of +22,compared to Chelsea’s +14 only.

Now, lets take a look at the Home form table, again just looking at the top 6:

Home table

GP W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Tottenham 19 17 2 0 47 9 +38 53
2 Chelsea 19 17 0 2 55 17 +38 51
3 Arsenal 19 14 3 2 39 16 +23 45
4 Everton 19 13 4 2 42 16 +26 43
5 Liverpool 19 12 5 2 45 18 +27 41
6 Manchester City 19 11 7 1 37 17 +20 40

As you can see Tottenham finished unbeaten at home in the League, and conceded ONLY 9 goals in 19 games!!
ASTOUNDING!!

Chelsea, on the other hand, lost 2 games, but still had the same goal difference of +38
But the did let in more, and score more.

I find these table really interesting as no doubt this will divide fans of both shirts and neutral supporters alike.

The form table of the last 10 matches display a very close run thing, and the defeat at West Ham for Tottenham sealed their fate

Last 10 matches (total)

GP W D L GF GA GD Pts 2.5+
1 Tottenham 10 9 0 1 31 5 +26 27 60%
2 Chelsea 10 8 0 2 26 12 +14 24 80%

The shortened version of the table ended as this:

Table

GP W D L GF GA GD Pts  Form PPG
1  Chelsea 38 30 3 5 85 33 +52 93 2.45
2  Tottenham 38 26 8 4 86 26 +60 86 2.26

So, conclusion…

Tottenham had better overall:

Goals for
Goals Against
Goal Difference
Golden Boot Winner (Harry Kane)
Least Games Lost

Chelsea had better overall:

Won more games
Drew less games
Better Points Per Game average at 2.45

But more importantly, as a result of less drawn games like Tottenham, 7 more points to end with a whopping 93 points.

Tottenham have their best haul of 86 points, which would have been good enough to win the league last year from Leicester, and on around 8 other occasions.
Also Tottenham scored 13 goals in their last 2 games!!

So…I will leave it up to you to argue who was the better team – not the winners – of this exceptional title race.

Please leave a comment as I would love to know who you think was the best!!

Thanks….
